Fineness Of Cement Or Fineness Test Of Cement
Hello friends, today in this post you will learn the Fineness test of cement with calculations & detail stepwise procedure.
So, don't skip to read the post completely. After reading the post, you will completely understand the simple tests of the Fineness test of cement.
So, let's start with these amazing topic...
What Is Fineness of Cement
The fineness of cement means it is a measure of cement particle size & it is denoted in terms of the specific surface area of cement.
The Fineness of Cement is find out by sieving cement samples through IS standard sieves.
The weight of a cement particle whose size is greater than 90 microns is determined.
Then the percentage of retained cement particles on the sieves is calculated. This is known as the Fineness of cement.
Why Fineness of Cement Test Required?
As we know that cement hydrates, when cement mixed with water & a thin layer are formed around the particle.
This thin layer grows bigger & makes cement particles separate. Because of this, the cement hydration process slows down.
Similarly, the smaller cement particles react much quicker than larger particles.
The cement particle having diameter of 1µm will react entirely in 1 day, on other hand, the particle with a diameter of 10µm takes about 1 month.
Due to smaller particles in cement, leads to quick setting, leaving no time for mixing, handling & placing.
Thus to increase the setting time of cement, cement must be manufactured in a different range of particle sizes.
Fineness Test of Cement
Aim
To determine the fineness of cement by using a 90 µm IS sieve as per IS: 4031 (Part 1) – 1996.
Apparatus
2. Weight Balance has a capacity of 10 mg to 100 g,
3. Nylon or pure bristle brush.
Procedure for determining the Fineness of Cement
- Take a sample of cement and rub it with your hands. The Fineness test sample should be free of lumps.
- Now Take 100 gm of cement sample & note down its weight as W1.
- Then, we have to put that 100 gm of cement in a 90 µm sieve & close it with the lid.
- Then, we have to shake the sieve with your hands by shaking the sieve in planetary & linear movements for about 15 minutes.
- After sieving 15 minutes, we have to take the weight of the retained cement on the 90 µm sieve as W2.
Fineness = (W2/W1) * 100
Then, calculate the percentage of Weight of cement retained on Sieve.
Now we can Repeat this procedure with three different samples of cement & average the values for accurate results.
Cement Fineness Calculation
The following table shows the fineness of cement value,
Sr.No. | Weight of Cement Sample | Weight Cement Sample Retained on 90µm Sieve | Fineness of Cement |
1 | 100 gm | 4.65 | 4.65 % |
2 | 100 gm | 8.25 | 8.25 % |
3 | 100 gm | 7.95 | 7.95 % |
Average | 6.95 % |
Result :
The standard value for the fineness of cement should have fineness less than 10 % or should not be more than 10% as per IS Recommendations.

FAQ:
Which size of the sieve to be used for the Fineness test of cement ?
The size of the sieve used to determine the fineness of cement is 90 micron IS Sieve.
What is the value of the fineness of cement?
Normally, the Cement used for construction purpose should have a value of fineness less than 10%.
Why fineness of cement is important?
- Smaller particles of cement react much quicker than larger particles.
- A cement particle with a diameter of 1µm will react entirely in 1 day, whereas the particle with a diameter of 10µm takes about 1 month.
- If a fine cement particle is more in cement then it will be set too quickly and that not feasible on-site to place concrete properly.
