Building Information modelling

Hello friends, today in this post you will learn about the : What is BIM & also about brief history of BIM with standards.

So, don't skip to read the post on : What is BIM completely. After reading the post, you will completely understand the simple concept of the What is BIM & other important topics.

So, let's start with these new interesting topic...

Future of BIM, history & importance

BIM stands for "Building information modeling"

BIM is an intelligent software modeling process in which various architects, engineers, and contractors can works together on a building’s design, various construction projects, services as well as difficult & costly operations virtually by using BIM software's.

In other words, it as a process in which the information was creating and managing  on a construction project throughout its whole life cycle.

It is like a digital process which includes a combination of information-rich 3D models. Along with that it is associated structured data such as product, execution and handover information.

Internationally, the BIM process and associated data structures are best defined in the ISO 19650 and 12006 series of standards.

Brief history and overview of BIM :

As new technological upgradations in market,  the BIM is one of the more promising developments in the architecture, engineering and construction sector.

With the help of BIM, there is changes of the way contractors and engineers do business, but its application is still relatively new and there is much more to learn.

Over a decades ago, the BIM was introduced  mainly to distinguish the information-rich architectural 3D modeling from the traditional 2D drawing.

BIM is very helpful for complicated projects because of its ability to correct errors early in the design stage and accurately schedule construction.

These advance technology allows to create an accurate virtual model of a structure to be constructed, which definitely helps to save money and time.

BIM includes an Completed computer-generated models which having accurate and well-defined geometry and pertinent data required to facilitate the construction, fabrication as well as for the procurement activities necessary to realize the final building.

BIM consists mainly of 3D modeling concepts in addition to information database technology and interoperable software in a desktop computer environment that architects, engineers, and contractors can use to design a facility and simulate the construction works easily.

The most important benefit of these technology are it allows members of the project team to generate a virtual model of the structure and all of its systems in 3D.

Along with that, they will be able to share that information with their project team members.

In these the drawings, specifications, and construction details are fundamental to the model.

This may includes attributes such as building geometry, spatial relationships, quantity characteristics of building components as well as the geographic information.

Other benefits of BIM, are that these allow the project team to quickly identify design and construction issues.

Also to resolve them in a virtual environment well before the Construction Phase in the real world.

These process mainly uses 3D real-time, dynamic building-modeling software to manage and increase productivity in building design and construction.

The BIM process produces all relevant data relating to building geometry, spatial relationships, geographic information as well as the quantities and properties of building components.

Building information modelling

Construction technology for the BIM process is continue trying to improve advance features in BIM process with the passing of time as contractors, architects, engineers, and others.

With the help of BIM technology, an accurate virtual model of a building can be constructed digitally.

After completing the computer-generated models, it will contain all the relevant data and accurate geometry needed to support the construction, fabrication as well as the procurement activities required to execute the project.

How can BIM help you?

In the early stages of a BIM project, a collaborative team from different disciplines works together.

It agrees the process and information structures to ensure that the design information developed is coordinated. Also these will be of maximum benefit to those involved in the construction as well as the operation stages.

As the project information developed, enters in to the construction stage,  these can be used to plan and build more efficiently projects.

BIM (Building information & modelling)

If there are certain revisions in the design are required or any changes require that can follow the agreed process in a transparent and recorded way.

After the completion of construction project and the in-use stage commences, the information that has been modelled can be used to operate the built asset.

Also here the Real-time information about the asset’s performance is modelled so that certain aspects of the built asset have a ‘digital twin’ equivalent.

What are the BIM standards?

Here are the number of standards that define BIM information structures as well as the processes internationally

1. Information structures :

  • ISO 16739-1:2018 – ‘Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) for the use of data sharing in the construction and facility management industries — Part 1: Data schema.
  • ISO 12006-2:2015 – ‘Building construction - Organization of information about construction works - Part 2: Framework for classification’. The UK National Foreword of this standard lists Uniclass 2015 as the classification system for UK BIM.
  • ISO 23386:2020 – ‘Building information modelling and other digital processes used in construction — Also the description of Methodology, author and maintain properties in interconnected data dictionaries’.

2. Processes :

  • UK BIM Framework – the ISO 19650 series of standards defines the BIM process internationally. These had their basis in the UK PAS 1192 series of standards.

What are BIM dimensions ?

BIM dimensions have evolved from a need to differentiate between modelling geometry in 2D or in 3D.

This also be an part of the modelling evolution, moving from drawing boards to the first 2D CAD systems, after that towards the 3D modelling packages.

Adding further aspects to this modelling can help project teams understand what information they are setting out to model.

In 4D dimension it includes scheduling information to model construction sequences’.

5D is known for adding financial cost’. There is little international consensus beyond this, as well as the arguably cost isn’t a ‘dimension’ at all – it is just a further information field.

The BIM 3D modelling having advanced technology has been widely adopted in this technological era which exploring new-age design sensibilities.

Why is BIM important ?

BIM is a design approach that keeps showing signs of continuously improvement with more advance technologies which in return makes a project more efficiently.

Also with increasing the ever-growing demand for urbanization, but there is induced complexity in new designs, designers as well as the engineers searching new techniques that can take up the challenges of design to make it pocket-friendly as well as the energy-efficient solutions.

In BIM, the 3D modeling is all it takes from the conceptual stages to the entire lifecycle of the building, which includes the process such as design, construct, operate, maintain, repair, and monitor a structure.
